Even if it is just the engine block, no tranny, no accessories, it’s still a heavy piece to be hanging from garage rafters.. Unless you have a metal-reinforced garage that was already set up to be used as a shop, I would very much recommend AGAINST using that idea.. There’s too much of a risk of pulling the roof down on yourself, which could hurt you very badly or even kill you..

Your best bet would be seeing if any friends/family have an engine lift you could borrow, or a place that you could rent one from for a day or two(they’re usually not too expensive to rent one just for a day).

I wouldn’t recommend just hanging it from the rafters in your garage… You don’t know if the rafters can support the weight and you may end up pulling the garage roof down on top of you. Why not look around the area where you live to see if you can rent a portable engine hoist for a day or two…
